A Personal Statement by the History's chronicler
The author of Volume One, Solomon Hardy (later changing his name to Mike Langridge by legal Statutory Declaration) was much exercised about the accuracy and objectivity of his account of the early days of the Fellowship and therefore appended this "disclaimer" to the work:
The full text reads as follows:
"In the writing of this account, I have been extremely
conscious that what is represented here is first and foremost
my own perception of events. Although I have tried to be as objective
and impartial as possible, inevitably I have only been able to
recount the experiences of which I was aware, and which seemed
significant to me. I know for example a number of instances where
events have been referred to almost by one-line entries, yet they
carried a whole wealth of meaning (and associated events not related
to me at the time) for the person involved. This problem is inevitable
when the only records which have been maintained were my own,
compounded also by the fact that, people having come and people
having gone, I'm the only one who has continuously remained in
the mainstream of the Current for the entire duration of its manifestation,
as far as I am aware.
Another consequence of this is that it may seem that I have been the principal focus of the Current; whether or not this is so I am not able to say. I can with certainty say that at different times both Pete Dawe and Sue Bennett must have felt the same way with regard to their own involvement.
I can also say that the Current, at fluctuating levels of intensity, has been with me since 1979; I acknowledge that the involvement of other people have stimulated it to gain quite dramatically in intensity. Pete certainly had this effect, it being even more marked with Sue.
This entire difficulty of presenting an objective view from one person's standpoint will hopefully in future volumes be eliminated, inasmuch as a policy is now being pursued of maintaining a regular journal with contributions from all involved. This task, which was introduced simply as a means of keeping a well-balanced record proved to be in fact the basis of an extremely powerful and potentially dangerous magical technique (which will no doubt be described in a subsequent volume) which has had a profound effect on the entire group, and has shed light on completely new and hitherto unsuspected aspects of the work, to the extent that. for the first time ever, glimpses are now available of the precise means by which the overall objectives of the group will be achieved.
This may be the only volume in the History which I personally will author, and with this in mind it is as much my own magical diary as it is the History of the group. Thus this deed of mine is an act of worship of the Goddess, and in that sense I also dedicate it to all members of the group, both past and present, but particularly to Sue, Jessica and Pete, without whose involvement the work would never have reached this point, and I would not have grown as I have. If this document becomes the property of posterity, as we believe and intend it shall, then these three will for ever be recorded in the annals of Magic as prime movers in what will become, I am sure, a totally new and unique area of magical practise.
