The Temple Rites Books

The Address in the Temple Rites book
The original Temple Rites Books

Broadly equivalent to the Wiccan "Book of Shadows", our Temple Rites Books were originally two hard-bound A4 books wherein were hand-scribed the very first ritual texts used by the Fellowship (when it was still the Circle of the Luna Light).
The first Texts therein were only those used in a specifically ritual context and included brief notes/directions for usage, but subsequent versions of the Books (see below) began to also include material such as the "Visions".

The Fellowship has always regarded this as an entirely proper and appropriate expansion of purpose.

It should not be inferred that these books are in any sense regarded by us as "sacred" although inevitably, given the very central position they have always occupied in our Magical activities, they are in a sense treated somewhat reverentially and certainly with the greatest respect.

However, these books and Texts are not "cast in stone". They are very much a dynamic and evolving body of material.
Whilst the inherited Texts remain untouched incoming Participants, should the desire so take them, are encouraged to create their own inspirational works which, if approved and accepted by all the Participants of the moment, are then embraced within the main body of Texts.

It has come to be a tradition that one of the very first projects of incoming Participants is to hand-scribe their own copy of the Temple Rites books, a task generally undertaken with enthusiasm and dedication, such that Participants have often incorporated other material into their own books, and embellished or ornamented the various Texts as they see fit - but always retaining with the greatest attention to detail the precise wording and sequence of the Texts being copied.
(It has been known, for example, for a Participant to scrap an entire book simply because of the unnoticed inclusion of a spelling mistake, or inadvertently mis-ordering the Texts being copied.)

Such innovation (the addition of new material for individual use, some of which may well filter back into the main body of Texts) prevails in many of the Fellowship's activities, and this it is that tends to instill a sense of life and dynamism into our ritual practises, whilst we still pay due regard to inherited customs and traditional forms.
(The wisdom of discerning what can be added to or modified, and what should remain unchanged, is one of the benchmarks by which can be determined the sincerity and integrity of a Participant's commitment to the Fellowship, and indeed their understanding of the Fellowship's purpose.)

Labour-intensive projects such as copying the Temple Rites books are never compulsorily imposed upon Participants though it has been noticed that this is frequently one of the very first "indications of involvement" that incoming Participants actually want to undertake. In a sense it has become a way for Participants to establish their "right of inheritance" and connection with the Fellowship.
(It also serves to acquaint the new Participant with the various Fellowship Texts of course, at a level that cannot be achieved simply by reading them.)

Consequently whilst there now exists within the Fellowship a number of different copies of the original Temple Rites Books they all broadly adhere to the original format.
